After school programming is offered from Tuesday through Friday from 3:45 to 5:45pm, beginning in the first grade. Currently, the after school program serves 171 students - more than 50% of the student population. Each day, students engage in three periods of after school programming: one period of snack time; one period of homework help to ensure students complete assignments, manage their time, and receive individualized academic support; and one period of enrichment classes to complement the school-day's academic focus. The after school program offers a wide variety of enrichment classes across multiple disciplines. The program's classes included: beginning Spanish, test preparation, academic enrichment, hip hop dance, modern dance, art club, chess, basketball, soccer, guitar, boat building, theater and physical fitness.
CRCS works to build partnerships with community-based non-profits that have track records of success in working with children. A few examples of collaborations are detailed below. Further information is available upon request.
Fit 4 Life Kids NYC is a New York City-based physical fitness organization that encourages children to have fun while staying active, with the ultimate goal of improving the overall health of children. CRCS partners and contracts with Fit 4 Life to give children increased opportunity for physical activity and development of important understandings of fair play.
El Pequeno Artista is a Brooklyn-based, bilingual arts center that creates immersive workshops to teach young children Spanish. CRCS partners and contracts with El Pequeno to facilitate an on-site Beginning Spanish class.
CRCS partners and contracts with Learning through Chess, also based in Brooklyn. Learning through Chess teaches children the fundamentals of chess which leads to important critical and logical thinking skills development, decision and problem solving skills development as well as the development of mathematical skills.
Brooklyn Music School is a Brooklyn-based organization that provides access to the performing arts regardless of income, age, previous experience, or professional aspirations. CRCS contracts with the Brooklyn Music School to provide guitar instruction in after school.
CRCS partners with Brooklyn Boat Works, a non-profit organization that works with a variety of schools in the community. Through this partnership, staff from the
organization teach a Boat Building class to a group of 5th graders in the after schoolprogram.
